Week 7 Review
Week 7 did not disappoint for one moment. We had powerhouse vs powerhouse, rivalry after rivalry, and a rivalry matchup that needed more than 4 quarters to settle a victor. This past week shows us why we love St. Louis high school football. Here were some of the best matchups from Week 7:
#5 Eureka @ #4 Ladue 37-40 (OT)
After much anticipation, The Suburban Superbowl did not disappoint. Coming into this game, these teams had a combined one loss, and that one loss being by one point. We knew this would be an incredible game. In a game that featured 9 total lead changes in regulation, this game almost felt like a tennis match. The second one team landed a punch, the other team landed one of their own. Ladue got up to a 20-17 lead going into halftime. Eureka would quickly bounce back with a score of their own in the third quarter, quickly followed up by a Ladue touchdown, making the game 27-24. After another drive down the field, Eureka took the lead with a 2-yard run to take back the lead 30-27. After more back and forth drives, Eureka held a 37-34 lead late in the 4th quarter. With 3:23 left to go in the game, Eureka had a 4th and 1 on the Ladue 26. But the Ram defense came up clutch once again, stopping a third 4th and 1 to take back the ball with 3 minutes left in the game. After a 3 minute drive down the field, Gavin Bader hit a 31-yard field goal to tie up the game and send it to overtime. In the first overtime period, the Wildcat defense held strong and forced Ladue to kick a field goal, giving Ladue a 40-37 lead. With a chance to win the game with a touchdown, the Ladue defense forced a fumble and recovered it to defeat the Eureka Wildcats in overtime in what some are saying is the game of the year!
St. Pius X (KC) @ #2 De Smet 28-34
On Saturday afternoon, the St. Pius X Warriors traversed I-70 and made their way to Creve Coeur to face the Spartans of De Smet. Both of these teams came into this game with very strong resumes. Right off the bat, the Warriors came out swinging, dominating the De Smet defense and jumping to a 21-7 lead at the half. After some halftime adjustments, De Smet came back with vengeance. The Spartans put up 27 unanswered points, eventually wrapping up a 34-27 comeback victory against St. Pius X. RB Cam Sharp rushed for over 200 yards to lead the Spartans to victory, putting them at a strong 6-1 record on the year. The Spartans finish the season with games against St. Mary’s and Lutheran North. If they can win both of those games, they will solidify themselves as the team to beat in Missouri.
#7 Troy Buchanan @ Francis Howell 14-10
Down in Weldon Spring, we found ourselves in an ancient battle – Trojans vs Vikings. The Viking defense came to play, holding the explosive Trojan offense to under 300 total yards of offense. That did not stop Trojan RB Tre Lococo, however, as he managed to to run for over 100 yards and find his way into the endzone once, which managed to be enough. Ever since losing in Week 1 by 1 point, the Trojans have won 6 games in a row and look to make the 7 this week against Liberty (Wentzville).
Centralia (Illinois) @ #1 (SS) Breese Central 42-33
Over in Illinois, we had a matchup between 2 undefeated teams – the Centralia Orphans and the Breese Central Cougars. This matchup had a combined record of 14-0 going into this game. Both of these teams had yet to see anyone of equal caliber. That was until they ran into each other. To start off the game, Centralia got up to a quick 14-0 lead, which would turn into a 21-7 lead at halftime. Breese Central, on their home turf, had to make an adjustment, and that is exactly what they did. After a touchdown on their opening drive, they continued to fight back and got within 1 point, trailing 28-27 with 3 minutes left in the game. The Orphans of Centralia then marched down the field to take a 35-27 lead with 1:43 left to go in the game. With hopes of taking this game into overtime, the Cougars started driving, but then an Owen Kehrer pass got intercepted and taken all the way back for a pick 6 by the MVP of this game, JaShawn Staples. This sealed the deal for the Centralia Orphans, making them 8-0 on the season and giving Breese Central their first loss of the year.
Lift for Life @ #5 (SS) Cardinal Ritter 22-30
Last but definitely not least, the Ritter Lions hosted the Lift for Life Hawks Thursday night. This game was very close for a majority of the time. Both teams exchanged scores, making the game 6-6 at halftime. Ritter managed to score 2 TDs in the third quarter, both coming via passing TD from Rhylan Moore, giving the Lions a 22-14 lead going into the 4th quarter. After a defensive stop, the Lions got the ball back and stormed down the field to score another TD, giving them a comfortable 30-14 lead. Lift for Life would tack on another TD, but it would not be enough, as the Lions got back in the win column with a 30-22 win. The Lions host CBC next week in one of the most highly anticipated matchups of the year.
