Week 6 Review
Week 6 brought us another slate of phenomenal games. From MCC thrillers to local nailbiters, the high school football teams of the St. Louis area continue to absolutely battle against each other. Here were some of the best games from this past weekend:
Rabun Gap-Nacoochee @ #2 CBC 28-27
Starting us off is the #2 ranked team in St. Louis, the CBC Cadets. They finally got to play on their home turf, but it did not come without a daunting opponent. This game was an absolute whirlwind. Pretty early in the game, Kingston McPike caught a 49 yard TD pass from Daylen Austin-Harvey to give the cadets a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter. Those would be the only points we would see for the next 3 quarters. Both defenses played to their best ability, keeping the game at 7-0 going into the 4th quarter. Rabun Gap was able to notch out back-to-back touchdowns in the 4th quarter, but CBC quickly responded with 2 touchdowns of their own to give themselves a 21-14 lead with 1:19 to go. However, after a huge kickoff return that got the Eagles down to the 2 yard line, Rabun Gap scored a game tying touchdown, taking this game into overtime. After Rabun Gap started off the extra period with a TD and extra point, Daylen Austin-Harvey leapt into the endzone to score for CBC. But…only needing an extra point to take this to 2OT, the extra point was blocked, giving the Eagles the last second victory. Austin Harvey finished the game with 336 passing yards and 3 TDs, while WR Kingston McPike finished with 152 receptions and 2 TDs.
#3 De Smet @ #5 SLUH 49-36
Down Highway 64, we had a matchup between 2 top 5 teams in St. Louis. This game was an absolute shootout. Both teams traded punches, but De Smet took a 20-14 lead into halftime. Right out of the half, QB Pat Stein found his way into the endzone to give the Jr. Bills a 21-20 lead. This did not last long, though, after De Smet followed it up with 2 quick touchdowns of their own, taking a 34-28 lead. After a few more defensive stops, the Spartans imposed their will and scored 2 more touchdowns, taking a 49-28 lead with 5 minutes left in the game. After everything was said and done, the Spartans sealed the deal with a 49-36 victory. QB Chase Cooper led the charge with 360 passing yards and 3 TDs.
#7 Pattonville @ Ritenour 35-38
In football, it does not matter how high you are ranked. It does not matter what your record is or your previous resume. All that matters is which team can play better football for 4 quarters. We saw this come to fruition at Ritenour Saturday night. Coming into this game, Pattonville came in as the #7 ranked team in St. Louis, dominating everyone that came into their path. Ritenour did not care. The Huskies took a hold of this opportunity. After Pattonville got multiple TDs in the first quarter, the Husky defense held them steadily throughout the rest of the game and allowed their offense to hammer the Pattonville defense. The Pattonville offense was not enough for them, as they fell to Ritenour 38-35, ending their 5 game winning streak.
#8 (SS) Freeburg @ #1 (SS) Breese Central 35-7
Over in Illinois, we saw a prime matchup between 2 of the top ranked small schools in the St. Louis area. The #8 Freeburg Midgets took on the undefeated #1 Breese Central Cougars. After a close contested first half, Breese Central scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to give them their 7th win in a row. They look to make that 8 next week against a very good Centralia team.
