Week 3 Review
This past week, we had the absolute privilege of witnessing some high quality high school football. From highly anticipated local rivalries to powerhouse out of town matchups, the high school football teams of St. Louis continued to show their grit this past week on the field.
CBC @ De Smet 59-48
Starting off our weekend of rivalry matchups, we had none other than the Cadets of CBC against the Spartans of De Smet. From the beginning, we knew this would be a show. Both teams were firing back to back punches, giving us a 14-14 score after the first quarter. However, the explosive offense of CBC proved to be too much for the Spartans. Led by QB Daylen Austin-Harvey, the Cadets put up 17 unanswered points in the second quarter, to take a 31-14 lead at halftime. The Spartans showed resilience in the second half, but the CBC offense continued to erupt, giving themselves a 59-48 victory. Austin-Harvey put up one of the more impressive stat lines in recent memory, rushing for 246 yards, throwing for 207, and contributing to 6 total touchdowns. QB Chase Cooper for the Spartans also put up some very impressive stats of his own, throwing for 487 yards and 3 touchdowns. The Spartans will host Chaminade next week, while the Cadets will be traveling to Kirkwood to play the Vianney Griffins.
Borgia @ Washington 27-21 (OT)
In a matchup that we have waited 19 years to see, we got exactly what we were hoping for. Seemingly the entire city of Washington found their way over to Washington High School to see the Borgia Knights play the Washington Blue Jays. This game was an absolute war. Both teams battled for the first quarter, either team able to put up any points. At halftime, we were tied 7-7. Then, after Washington seemingly started to pull away, Borgia mounted a comeback in the 4th quarter followed by a 2-pt conversion to tie the game up at 21, sending the game into overtime. I don’t know if you could have scripted a better game. After a defensive stop, Borgia RB Tyler Woodle punched in the game winning touchdown, ending an instant classic down in Washington.
Fort Zumwalt North @ Fort Zumwalt West 33-27 (2 OTs)
While the Battle of Washington was happening down south, we had a different battle happening up north – The Battle of O’Fallon. Over at Zumwalt West, the Jaguars hosted the Panthers of Zumwalt North in the heated GAC rivalry. This game went back and forth so much that they didn’t need just one overtime period, but 2. Neither team ever put up double digits in a single quarter, but both teams consistently scored right after the other. After both teams were tied up after regulation, FZN QB Josiah Potts led the charge into the endzone to put the Panthers up 27-21. But after a Panthers failed 2-pt conversion, a West touchdown and extra point could seal the deal. After a Gavin Morris 16-yard TD run, the Jaguars had a chance to put the game away, but could not, leading to a second overtime, where the Panthers got a defensive stop followed by a game winning touchdown from Potts. Fort Zumwalt North put up 327 total rushing yards, Potts contributing to 155 of those with 4 TDs, including the game winning touchdown.
Cardinal Ritter @ Knoxville Catholic 22-28
While the St. Louis area offered some high-quality prime time matchups, The Ritter Lions found themselves 7 Hours down the road in Knoxville, Tennessee, to face the highly ranked Knoxville Catholic Fighting Irish. This game was a nailbiter from the beginning, as both teams exchanged blows throughout the entire game. Cardinal Ritter managed to find themselves with a 22-21 lead late in the game, and had a chance to seal the game with a defensive stop, but The Fighting Irish were able to sneak into the endzone with less than a minute left in the game. QB Rhylan Moore led the Ritter offense with 327 passing yards and 2 TDs. Ritter, now 1-2 (that record being very deceiving), will host Millard South this upcoming week in another very tough matchup.
SLUH @ Chaminade 13-7
After a heart-wrenching loss last week at CBC, SLUH wanted to right the ship. And that is exactly what they did. In a game that found SLUH trailing for most of it, the Jr. Billikens managed to continue fighting. After a 74 yard punt return touchdown from Chaminade’s Donovan Irving, the SLUH defense absolutely shut down the Chaminade offense the rest of the game. After managing to get 2 touchdowns in the third quarter, SLUH did not allow another point, leading to a 13-7 win. The SLUH offense put up 194 total rushing yards, QB Pat Stein contributing to 104 of those with a TD run. Next week, SLUH will be making the trip to O’Fallon to play the Crusaders of St. Dominic, while Chaminade will be playing at De Smet against the Spartans.
