Week 2 Preview
After a week that featured some absolute thrillers, it is now time for the high school football programs of the St. Louis area to respond – some to heartbreak, some to success. While your first game of the season can at times be one of the most anticipated ones, usually week 2 is actually more important. It is time to either fold and lay down, or it is time to bounce back and show what you really can do.
Francis Howell @ Fort Zumwalt North
Starting off our Week 2 slate of matchups is none other than the classic rivalry of Fort Zumwalt North vs Francis Howell. This game will be taking place tonight at 7:00 PM @ Fort Zumwalt North. Both of these teams are coming off of disappointing Week 1 losses and are hungry to get a win on the board.
Also at 7:00 PM tonight, Ladue will be headed south on Lindbergh Boulevard to battle the Griffins of Vianney High School. Coming off a very solid win against MICDS, Ladue is looking to continue to show their dominance over the West County area.
Following these Thursday night football matchups, Friday night is bound to premier even more highly anticipated battles. Starting us off early at 6PM @ Spinelli Field are the Jr. Billikens of SLUH against the Cadets of CBC. SLUH, coming off a punishing win against Hazelwood Central, would absolutely love to give CBC their first 0-2 start in 23 years. However, the Cadets do not go down that easy, especially at Spinelli Field.
Also at 6:00 PM, about 15 minutes northeast of CBC, the decorated Blair Oaks Falcons will be traveling from Wardsville all the way to north county to face off against the Lutheran North Crusaders. Blair Oaks has been an absolute powerhouse for years and has tended to get the best of St. Louis area teams, so hopefully Lutheran North can put an end to that.
At 7:00 PM in the heart of St. Louis, Cardinal Ritter will look to defend their home turf again versus the De Smet Spartans. After a thrilling matchup last week against Lutheran North, things do not get easier for the Lions. This is a chance for both of these teams to identify themselves as the team to beat in St. Louis.
Boy did Eureka give us a show last week. With an absolute dominant offensive performance last Friday night, the Wildcats of Eureka look to continue their offensive prowess against a top tier program in Hannibal.
Gainesville (GA) @ East St. Louis
In one of the most powerhouse matchups we will see this weekend, the Red Elephants of Gainesville Georgia will be making the trip all the way up to Illinois to face the Flyers of East St. Louis. After a disappointing overtime loss against a nationally ranked American Heritage team, the boys of East St. Louis would love to send the Gainesville football team back on a silent and sad flight home.
